New school gym opens in Peace River North region

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A Peace River North school originally built in 1960 finally has a new gym.

Students at Upper Halfway Elementary School, which supports students from kindergarten to Grade 10, previously used gym facilities at nearby Halfway Graham Community Hall, which is not wheelchair accessible and lacks washroom facilities.

“We’re excited by the opportunities the new gym will bring for our students at Upper Halfway and the community in general. The gym will allow for expanded physical education offerings year round,” Peace River North board of education chair Helen Gilbert said in a statement.

The new gymnasium is built to LEED Gold standards and is an accessible facility for use by the entire community, a release stated.

The Province of B.C. invested $5.7 million for the gym with the Peace River North school district contributing an additional $29,000.
