Skilled Trades Workforce Development Program prepares next gen tradespeople

ETOBICOKE, ONT. – Support Ontario Youth (SOY) is launching a new program it says will prepare the next generation of tradespeople to seamlessly integrate in the industry and equip them for success.

The Skilled Trades Workforce Development Program includes the Tools in the Trades Boot Camp and Trades Readiness Training.

SOY supports apprentices, employers and stakeholders in the skilled trades industry by streamlining and simplifying the apprenticeship journey. The Employment Ontario Program is funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.

Tools in the Trades Boot Camp one-day events allow individuals to train for free and connect with a range of employers actively looking to hire. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with a range of employers face-to-face, showcase their skills and make connections.

The boot camp offers hands-on tool experiences across multiple trades, pathways to apprenticeship, free training programs, a complementary starter tool kit, and support for various sectors, including construction, industrial and motive power.

In terms of eligibility, the program is open to individuals 18-plus and recent high school graduates interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades.

Trades Readiness Training is designed for individuals embarking on an apprenticeship journey and those already pursuing a career in the trades.

Depending on an individuals’ needs, services may include essential employability and networking skills; trades readiness preparation; mentorship; health and safety training; product knowledge; and insights into the realities of entering the apprenticeship pathway.

The goal is to ensure a tailored approach to each journey. It also provides opportunities for current sector workers to upskill and advance their careers. According to the program description, through mentorship and specialized training, individuals gain the guidance and skills needed to excel in their chosen trade, from mastering safety protocols to developing crucial workplace competencies.

The program is open to individuals aged 18-plus and recent high school graduates interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Current skilled sector workers looking to upskill and advance are also eligible.

SOY encourages employers to participate in the program by recruiting skilled trades candidates.

“Our Skilled Trades Workforce Development program, and particularly our Tools in the Trades Boot Camp, play a critical role in preparing the next generation of tradespeople,” said Melanie Winter, executive director of SOY, in a statement. “We are committed to providing high-quality training and support to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in Ontario.”
