TORONTO—A worker has died following an incident at Ontario Place.
Toronto Police Operations reported the industrial incident occurred this morning (Sept. 17) on X. The police were called to the scene at 9:37 a.m. following reports that a person was injured by construction equipment. At that time, police reported injuries sustained by the individual were life-threatening.
Firefighters and EMS were also called to the scene but the individual was not transported to hospital.
A further update by Toronto police confirmed the male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Media reports state a piece of equipment was being unloaded when it flipped over.
The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development is investigating the incident. Two ministry inspectors visited the scene.
The employer, Matthews Equipment Limited/Herc Rentals, was issued two requirements. The investigation is ongoing.
Ontario Place is currently undergoing a redevelopment. Plans include the relocation of the Ontario Science Centre building to the site, a spa with an indoor water park, a stage for concerts as well as green space and beaches.
The incident was not related to the ongoing construction at the site and there is speculation it was being used for film purposes.
