A $5.4 million contract for the rehabilitation of the historic Chaudiere Crossing in Ottawa has been awarded to Laval-based Construction Kiewit Cie. Work will start this fall and is expected to be completed next winter.
The planned rehabilitation work will mainly consist of a precast concrete alternative for both arches which involves the new construction of footings in the water and the construction of a temporary installation frame beside the arch. The precast concrete arch segments will be factory made and delivered to the site. The segments will be assembled on the installation frame and slid under the existing stone arch. A cofferdam and dewatering will be required and precast spandrel walls will have to be installed.
The Chaudiere Crossing was constructed in the late 1820s and is the oldest bridge in the National Capital Region. Funds for the project come through the Economic Action Plan.
Contracts have also been issued to repair and restore three other federally-owned bridges, the LaSalle Causeway, Kingston, ON, the Burlington Lift Bridge, in Burlington, ON, and the Alexandra Bridge linking Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec.
