Newmarket’s signature York Region Administrative Centre, a masonry-clad structure designed by Douglas Cardinal Architect Inc. and constructed by Milne & Nicholls Ltd., has won a 2007 Masonry Masterpiece Award.

The 245,000-square-foot building, completed in 1992 at a cost of $60 million, was recognized in the innovation category. It was deemed the building that best demonstrated design innovations contributing to sustainable development.

The win was music to the ears of York Region chair and CEO Bill Fisch, who was on hand for the awards ceremony.

“We’re proud of our building, which began as a gleam in people’s eyes in the 1980s,” he said. “It has become a major focal point for Newmarket and the region.”

The award was one of three handed out in the second annual awards program, presented by MasonryWorx, an industry association representing Ontario’s product manufacturers, suppliers and skilled professionals.

The awards recognize excellence in building with masonry products. This year, projects in York Region were considered.

“York Region has many wonderful examples, old and new, of masonry buildings that are, and will become, cornerstones of the communities,” said MasonryWorx president Judy Pryma.

Also in the winners’ circle were:

• The Office Specialty Lofts building. Designed by Gerald P. Belanger Architects and constructed by M.G. Lewis Ltd., the project was recognized in the heritage and restoration category as the building that best conveyed a sense of the past and defined local character.

• Inspiration Bathurst. Designed by Cassidy and Co. and constructed by Tribute Communities, the development was recognized as one that made best use of masonry products to create a visual sense of community and sustainability.

MasonryWorx past president Frank Buck, vice-president, commercial, northern region at Hanson Brick Ltd., said the association is intent on boosting the profile of masonry “in a very public way.

“Ontario is a province that was built on masonry construction,” Buck said. “Today, because of all the new materials that are out there and available to builders and developers, it has become a much more competitive market.

“We want people to be aware of what we have to offer.”

Awards sponsors include Construction Canada, Hanson Brick and Arriscraft International.
