A subsidiary of Bird Construction Inc. (TSX:BDT) has been awarded a construction contract for a Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI) prepared meats facility in Hamilton, Ontario.
Bird Construction Inc. (TSX:BDT) of Toronto announced Monday that one of its subsidiaries has been awarded a construction contract for a Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI) facility in Hamilton.
The Bird Construction press release did not include the value of the contract but a press release from Maple Leaf Foods last October stated the prepared meats facility would cost $395 million.
Construction on the 402,000-square foot prepared meat processing facility has already started and is expected to be complete by 2014, according to Bird Construction, which expected the plant will attain a silver certification under leadership in energy and environmental design (LEED).
Toronto-based Maple Leaf Foods Inc. was formed in 1991 with the merger of Maple Leaf Mills Ltd. and Toronto-based meat firm Canada Packers Inc. Products include packaged meats sold under the Maple Leaf and Schneiders brands. It also owns 90 per cent of Canada Bread Company Ltd. Maple Leaf Foods is led by president and CEO Michael McCain, son of New Brunswick potato magnate Wallace McCain, who died last year. The controlling shareholders of publicly-traded Maple Leaf Foods are McCain Capital Corp. and Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board.
Last October, Maple Leaf announced it would spend $560 million in infrastructure and technologies over three years, including the Hamilton plant under construction by Bird. At the time, Maple Leaf said it would also invest in existing plants in Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Brampton, Ontario.
The firm also plans to consolidate four distribution centres into two.
