Yellowknife’s Greenstone Government of Canada Building has been awarded LEED Gold, a major accomplishment for the first such certified building constructed “north of 60”.

Designed by Manasc Isaac Architects of Edmonton, Greenstone is considered an innovative model for high-performance built environments in extreme climates.

“We’re very excited about this rating for Greenstone,” says Vivian Manasc, architect and principal of Manasc Isaac Architects. “Not only is this a first for the north, it’s also our first LEED Gold-rated project for the firm.”

Greenstone was designed as a comfortable workplace for approximately 200 federal civil servants who were previously scattered throughout 15 separate departments in the city.

Sustainable features are integrated at every level. Most impressive, Manasc said, is the building’s prominent curtainwall-integrated, photo-voltaic system, the largest in Canada when the building opened in October 2005.

Annual energy use is 58.6 per cent below the model baseline, the architects said. That translates into more than $80,000 in energy savings per year for Canadian taxpayers. Reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are calculated to be more than 370 tonnes per year.

The building also features a green roof and downtown Yellowknife’s only outdoor public green space.

Greenstone was awarded a national Innovation Award by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada in May.

A leader in sustainable design, Manasc Isaac Architects Ltd. is one of the fastest-growing architectural firms in Alberta with a staff of more than 45.
