The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency announced Monday it is starting an environmental assessment for Cliffs Natural Resources Inc.’s (NYSE: CLF) proposed Chromite Project in northern Ontario.

The project includes the construction, operation and eventual decommissioning of an open pit and underground chromite ore mine. It would also include an all-season road corridor and a new ferrochrome production facility, which would be located at a different location than the mine site.

CEAA has prepared a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Guidelines that identify potential environmental effects to be addressed and information that needs to be included in the proponent's EIS. Public comments are due November 16.

CEAA is also making available $40,000 under its Participant Funding Program to assist groups and individuals to participate in the federal environmental assessment of this project. Applications for funding are also due Nov. 16.

Based in Cleveland, Cliffs operates iron ore and coal mines in North America and two iron ore mining complexes in Western Australia.
