New addition slated for Atikokan hospital

ATIKOKAN, ONT.—The province of Ontario is investing up to $11.3 million at the Atikokan General Hospital, which will go towards building a new addition and renovating the existing space.

Through this project, about 6,200 square feet of the existing facility will be renovated and about 8,900 square feet will be added, reads a release.

A new modern facility will be created in order to provide better co-ordinated and integrated acute and long-term care. Four new acute care beds will be added, bringing the total to 15 beds as well as four new long-term care beds will be added, bringing the total to 26.

Construction is expected to be complete in winter 2017.

According to the release, taking part in modernizing public infrastructure will support more than 110,000 jobs a year on average. A Conference Board of Canada report estimated that Ontario’s public infrastructure investment would add more than $1,000 to the average annual income of Ontarians.
