BANFF, ALTA.—Brewster Travel Canada has announced a $26-million redevelopment of its flagship attraction, the Banff Gondola, with retrofitting of the upper terminal building to improve public spaces and add new food outlets, a conference facility and an interpretive centre set to begin imminently.
Brewster is partnering with PCL Construction and sister-company Global Experience Specialists to design and build the redeveloped attraction, located in Banff National Park, Alberta.
Specifics of what is billed as an "experiential transformation" include:
— the addition of an interactive interpretive centre that will highlight the park and its ecosystems and incorporate a new 40-seat cinema with a curated theatre presentation;
— an expanded rooftop viewing deck providing 360-degree views of the Banff town site, the Bow Valley and the surrounding Rocky Mountains; and
— a conference space that will accommodate weddings, corporate events and other groups of up to 150 people.
Scheduling of the work has been planned to avoid the most sensitive period for wildlife species native to the host Sulphur Mountain. Construction was set to begin on Sept. 8, following which the existing upper terminal facilities will no longer be accessible to the public. The Banff Gondola will be operational and the Banff SummitWalk will be accessible through Oct. 25, after which these attractions will also close to the public. Limited facilities in the new upper terminal will re-open to the public on May 1, 2016 with full project completion anticipated for Aug. 1, 2016.
