Garrison Petawawa receives $20 million for needed infrastructure

PETAWAWA, ONT.—Garrison Petawawa is getting a major funding boost of $20 million to help improve and expand critical infrastructure for the Canadian Armed Forces, the federal government has announced.

The military base has close to 600 buildings, including 1,600 family housing units.

The $20 million will go towards modernizing and renovating these housing units, repairing roadways, and will also be used for improvements to the Military Quarters to support members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families, a release states.

"Our Government is committed to making sure that those who bravely serve our country have access to modern, updated facilities," Julian Fantino, associate minister of National Defence said in a statement.

These ‘accelerated investments’ will help create more than 10,000 jobs by the end of 2016, the government estimates.

"Funding such as this is important not only to the Canadian Armed Forces members who benefit directly from it, but from the community at large, through the boost it gives to the local economy in helping create jobs," adds Cheryl Gallant, MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke.

The Department of National Defence has received $452 million for repairs and upgrades to Canadian Armed Forces facilities.
