Highway 404 to undergo widening for HOV lanes

TORONTO — The governments of Ontario and Canada have announced plans to partner in expanding Highway 404 north of the Highway 407 ETR in the Toronto region.

The project will include widening the highway from six to eight lanes and adding an HOV lane in each direction between the 407 and Stouffville Road, for an approximate length of 10.4 kilometres, a media statement released Dec. 9 indicated.

The build will also include construction of a new 171-vehicle carpool lot at Major Mackenzie Drive, rehabilitation of two overpasses at Highway 7, widening the 16th Avenue overpasses and replacement of the Rouge River overpasses.

The province is responsible for delivering the project. Work is expected to begin in 2017, with anticipated completion in 2021.
