Construction is underway for a new Courtyard Marriott hotel in Burlington, Ont.

The $22-million, 135-room, six-storey hotel at 1110 Burloak Dr. will be connected via an outdoor link to the 25,000-square-foot Burlington Convention Centre next door.

This will be the third hotel in the immediate area, with the Sandman Hotel on South Service Road on the other side of Burloak Drive and the Hilton Garden Inn on the south side of Highway 403 on Syscon Road.

"The building fronts the Queen Elizabeth Way and all transportation networks are easily accessible, including the 407 Express Toll Route, five minutes to GO Transit for easy access to downtown Toronto or a 30-minute drive. Pearson International Airport is a 30-minute drive and Hamilton International Airport is 20 minutes," said Frank Vismeg, managing director of Courtyard by Marriott — Burlington Hotels Group Inc./Burloak Hospitality Management Ltd.

Burlington Hotels Group is a partnership that includes Vismeg, who will oversee hotel operations, Domenic Fuda, president of TriAxis Construction Limited of Mississauga, Ont. and Jack Moreira, owner of the Burlington Convention Centre and Burloak Hospitality Management.

The new hotel will offer a Bistro Plus Restaurant and Bar as well as a fully-equipped fitness room, an indoor swimming pool, an exterior courtyard, a business centre, 1,800 square feet of meeting and banquet space and an energy efficient program including in-house recycling.

Vismeg added they will also be installing Tesla and Universal electric vehicle charging stations — six at the hotel and another six at the Burlington Convention Centre.

This, among other green business practices, are put into place to cater to the ever-growing eco-traveller market and attract electric vehicle owners from farther away, Vismeg stated.

According to Marriott International, projects such as this are driven by a solid increase in the demand for business and leisure travel in Ontario. The Courtyard by Marriott brand is one of 30 hotel brands in their global portfolio. It boasts over 1,000 hotels in 42 countries.

"Burlington is (the) number one mid-size city in Canada and across Burloak (Drive), Oakville is number two, which makes us in the midst of a prosperous Halton Region," said Vismeg.

"Burloak Drive resides within a prestigious office park overlooking the expansive Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The offices lay opposite the Burlington Convention Centre alongside the Burloak RioCan Centre just a short stroll away."

Upon completion, which is slated for August 2018, it is estimated 45 to 50 jobs will be created at the hotel and 15 to 20 at the convention centre as the hotel will attract more events.

"The Courtyard Marriott Hotel on Burloak Drive will be a wonderful addition to the 25,000-square-foot Burlington Convention Centre. Travelling from their hotel room to their next meeting will be a seamless experience. I’m looking forward to cutting the ribbon on this property," said Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring.
