TIGNISH, P.E.I. — The governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island recently held a community information event in Tignish, P.E.I. to showcase the Tignish District Heating Project currently under construction.
The governments announced a joint contribution of up to $752,540 to the project through the Small Communities Fund in April 2016, representing two-thirds of the estimated $1.1-million total project cost.
The remainder of the cost will be provided by Tignish Initiatives Corporation, notes a media statement.
Tignish corporation will finance one-third of the capital costs and will own and operate the facility.
This project is the first of its kind on Prince Edward Island.
The general contractor, Wood4Heating Canada, is responsible for the construction and commissioning of the system under the direction of Bay Winds Consulting, the project manager.
The system will include a new boiler house and an underground hot water piping network coupled together with a new control system.
The project will utilize European and Canadian technology to heat water in a central plant, with locally sourced wood chips, that will then be used to heat local commercial buildings.
Approximately 500 tonnes of locally harvested wood chips will replace 200,000 litres of furnace oil each heating season.
During the community event held July 14, residents were treated to a tour of the partially finished heating system, which will use underground piping, valves, heat exchangers and energy meters to generate and deliver heat for 10 commercial buildings in the Tignish core.
"Investments in green infrastructure will help protect communities and support Canada’s ongoing transition to a clean, sustainable growth economy that will benefit Islanders for generations to come," commented Bobby Morrissey, MP for Egmont, in a statement.
"I am excited to see that Tignish is taking the lead on implementing greener technologies that will foster economic growth by supporting job creation and reducing energy costs for residents and businesses."
