TORONTO — Numerous speakers participated in a surprise tribute to retiring Toronto and York Region Labour Council president John Cartwright, who is also chair of the Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN).
Here are some of their thoughts.
“We’ve built a successful movement for community benefits largely as a result of John’s leadership and support. His efforts have really allowed us to build and sustain the community benefits movement in Toronto.” — Rosemarie Powell, executive director, TCBN.
“For me personally, you are an influencer that motivated people like myself to step forward and speak out about social justice, discrimination and racism in the construction sector.” — Chris Campbell, equity and diversity representative, Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario.
“You were a leader who had the audacity to encourage me and others to join a union…with the vision to improve lives and our community. We thank you for that.” — Mike Yorke, president, Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario.
“John has been advocating for people who are disadvantaged…and it wasn’t just Black people. Italian, Portuguese who couldn’t speak English were also disadvantaged and John was advocating for them too. John has never given up. He has never taken no for an answer. He was always there.” — Ucal Powell, former executive secretary treasurer of the Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario.
