OTTAWA—The Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) has announced Canada ranked second globally on the annual list of Top 10 Countries and Regions for LEED certification in 2021.
In 2021, Canada certified 205 projects, representing more than 3.2 million gross square metres (GSM) of LEED space.
The global LEED ranking is released annually by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is intended to highlight countries and territories outside the United States that are making significant progress in sustainable design, stated a recent release.
China certified 1,077 projects with 152.3 million GSM in 2021. Following Canada were India, 146 projects, 30.3 million GSM; Korea, 42 projects, 16.8 million; Spain, 100, 16.1 million; United Arab Emirates, 73, 13.7 million; Brazil, 89, 13.4 million; Italy, 106, 12.5 million; Mexico, 47, 10.3 million; and Taiwan, 31, 9.6 million.
“Over the last two decades, CAGBC members, stakeholders and supporters have demonstrated how certified green buildings support our economy, create jobs and are better for both people and the planet,” said Thomas Mueller, president and CEO of the CAGBC, in a statement. “There is much work to be done to meet Canada’s climate and environmental goals.”
The U.S. is not included in the list. It had more than 26 million GSM of certified space in 2021.
