Construction employment fell in July
Construction employment declined 3.9 per cent from June to July according to the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey released today. In a study of employment by class of worker and industry, seasonally adjusted, construction employment totalled 1,412,300 in July, down from 1,416,200 in June 2021. Comparing July 2021 to July 2020, employment in the sector was up 3.5 per cent. Overall employment rose by 94,000 (0.5 per cent) in July, adding to the 231,000 (1.2 per cent) increase in June. The unemployment rate fell 0.3 percentage points to 7.5 per cent.
IWH to co-host World Congress
The World Congress on Safety and Health at Work has been scheduled for virtual sessions Sept. 20 to 23. The event will be co-hosted across Canada by the Institute for Work and Health.
Best to helm new Ontario Data Authority
The Ontario government today announced it has appointed public data consultant Andy Best to lead the development of a new provincial Data Authority. The new agency will be responsible for building modern data infrastructure to support economic and social growth, with further mandates to develop privacy and security policy. Best is the CEO and co-founder of Civic Digital Network, a non-profit organization that creates data infrastructure frameworks for public institutions.
Tremonti to address ACEC conference
The Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada has announced CBC News reporter Anna Maria Tremonti as the closing keynote speaker at its National Leadership Conference. The event is scheduled for Oct. 20 with the theme Reimaging our World.
