Transit ridership increased in July

Statistics Canada reports today that public transit ridership increased in July, as COVID-19 restrictions eased in many provinces and vaccination rates continued to climb. But recovery toward pre-pandemic levels remains slow with ridership currently sitting at 40.5 per cent of the number from the same month in 2019. In July, an estimated 59.7 million passenger trips were made on Canada’s urban transit networks, an increase of 11.0 per cent, or 5.9 million trips, from July 2020. Ridership remained well below July 2019, at 87.7 million fewer passengers.

 

Kontrol negotiates export deal

Ontario-based Kontrol Technologies Corp. yesterday announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding with an international HVAC company to export Kontrol’s BioCloud technology outside of Canada. Kontrol develops smart building technologies and the deal represents a possible opportunity to have the technology manufactured internationally. The HVAC company is not being named for competition reasons but it is part of large global industrial conglomerate with approximately $30 billion of annual revenues and 30,000 distributors globally.

 

New CEO for Elexicon Energy

Elexicon Energy Inc. has announced Indy Butany-DeSouza as president and CEO. Butany-DeSouza was the former vice-president of regulatory affairs at Alectra Utilities. Elexicon is the fourth largest municipally-owned electricity distributor in Ontario and is owned by the municipalities of Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Belleville and Clarington.

 

Gupta assumes new role with Gupta Group, Easton

The Gupta Group and Easton’s Group of Hotels, based in Toronto and Markham, Ont. respectively, have announced that their president and CEO Reetu Gupta will be stepping into a new role of ambassadress and principal. Easton is Canada’s largest private hotel development corporation and has added two new hotels under Gupta’s leadership during the pandemic. Gupta will remain in an ownership position and will be representing ownership interests in pursuing an expansion strategy.
