Province to fund Barrie community hub

The Ontario government announced today it is allocating $29 million to support the construction of a $40-million community hub in downtown Barrie. The new hub, to be operated by the YMCA of Simcoe Muskoka, will include licensed child care spaces, a youth centre with transitional housing and outreach support, a rehabilitation space for cardiac and cancer post-care patients, and various recreation areas for fitness programs. 


Bird announces refinery services contract

Bird Construction announced this morning that it has been awarded a three-year contract with a two-year extension option for mechanical and electrical maintenance services for the North West Redwater Partnership refinery in Redwater, Alta. The total value of the multi-year contract awarded is potentially up to $75 million.  


Kennaley revisits administrator’s role following earthworks case

Lexology today posted an article by Robert Kennaley and Effi Sidiropoulos of Ontario’s Kennaley Construction Law revisiting the law on the extent to which a contract administrator’s findings can be challenged. The issue was recently addressed in relation to progress certifications in Pentad Construction Inc. v. 2022988 Ontario Inc., where the contract called for civil earthworks to be certified and approved by an authorized engineer before any amounts would become due and payable.  


Ford visits Bracebridge for infrastructure announcement

Ontario Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith today for an infrastructure announcement. Watch for the event at 1 p.m. on the premier’s YouTube channel. Later today, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli has scheduled an announcement on site at a Hamilton business, Coreprint Patterns, starting at 2:30 p.m.
