Feds to upgrade Gaspe harbours

RIVIERE-AU-RENARD, QUE. — The federal government has announced it will spend $50.2 million over the next three years on harbour infrastructure across the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec.

Projects include repairs to the main breakwater at the Riviere-au-Renard wharf, which was damaged in December 2022 following a severe winter storm. Funding is through the Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Small Craft Harbours Program.

Projects are as follows: Bonaventure – dredging work; Cloridorme – ground repairs; L’Anse-a-Beaufils – upgrade retaining wall, dredging work; L’Anse-a-Brillant – dredging work; Les Mechins – dredging work; Mont-Louis – wharf reconstruction; Newport – completion of phases two and three of the harbour revitalization; Port-Daniel Est – dredging work; Riviere-au-Renard – repairs to the main wharf breakwater, ground repairs, dredging work; Saint-Georges-de-Malbaie – extension of the wharf breakwater; Saint-Godefroi – dredging work; Sainte-Anne-des-Monts – ground repairs; and Sainte-Madeleine-de-la-Riviere-Madeleine – wharf divestiture project.

“Small craft harbours are the backbone of our vibrant fishing communities across the country, including here in the Gaspe Peninsula,” stated Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Diane Lebouthillier in a statement. “As a country with the longest coastline in the world, we need to invest in resilient harbour infrastructure that can cope with the climate challenges of today and tomorrow.”
