Emergency repairs restore services to Quebec wharf

OTTAWA — Transport Canada has announced that emergency repairs to La Romaine wharf on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec were completed on July 7 and that container traffic has resumed.

The wharf serves the community of La Romaine and the First Nations community of Unamen Shipu.

Work was done on the wharf in fall 2017, and Transport Canada announced that additional work would be needed in 2018, a July 13 statement said. The department issued a call for tenders, and the repair work was scheduled for this summer.

But after the ice melted and Public Services and Procurement Canada carried out an inspection on May 30, it was revealed winter storms had exacerbated the damage to the wharf and that emergency repairs would be required.

On June 6, Transport Canada issued restrictions to navigation and operations at La Romaine wharf, to ensure safety. As a result, part of the wharf and three mooring bollards were condemned.

Following the repairs, the mooring bollards are back in service and the gap underneath the concrete slab had been filled.

The statement noted wharf users must continue to comply with the operational restrictions that were put in place prior to June 6. Those restrictions include a load limitation of 7.5 kilopascals across the whole of the port infrastructure.

Transport Canada intends to undertake other work on the wharf in 2018, including repairs to the slab and light pole as well as electrical work.
