Tourism infrastructure help for Algoma and Manitoulin

TORONTO — The Ontario Government is supporting tourism infrastructure in the Algoma region and Manitoulin Island through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines Greg Rickford announced an investment of over $1.3 million May 22. Since June 2018, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation has invested more than $63 million in 501 projects, creating or retaining over 772 jobs.

Projects that will receive funding include:

  • $1 million for the Township of Billings to complete infrastructure improvements to the Kagawong waterfront;
  • $282,080 for the City of Elliot Lake to improve its tourism information area, known as The Trailhead, local tourism information services, and to expand and redevelop the boat launch area located on the shore of Elliot Lake; and
  • $25,000 for the Municipality of Wawa to build new infrastructure for the Wawa Drag Races, allowing the event to be held in one central location.
