Ontario invests in SickKids hospital patient care tower

TORONTO — The Ontario Government is investing in the construction of the new Peter Gilgan Family Patient Care Tower and the expansion of the blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy unit at SickKids in Toronto.

The commitment is part of the government’s overall investment of $27 billion over the next 10 years to build new and expanded hospital infrastructure across the province.

While the long-term redevelopment project known as Project Horizon is underway, the renovation of SickKids’ current blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy unit will increase services for patients in isolation, indicates a release issued by the Office of the Premier. The renovation of this unit is expected to be completed by summer 2022.

The SickKids campus redevelopment project is in the early stages of planning and will also include renovation to the existing atrium, expanded parking facilities and a new patient support centre for administration and support services. The blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy unit revitalization includes renovating 9,400 square feet of existing space.

Once the full-campus redevelopment of SickKids is completed, patients and families will benefit from modernized and expanded services for critical care; paediatric surgery; emergency medicine; outpatient diagnostics; specialty outpatient clinics; and blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy.

“The new Peter Gilgan Family Patient Care Tower and expansion of the current blood and marrow transplant/cellular therapy unit at SickKids will make a real difference in the lives of young patients and their families,” said Deputy Premier Christine Elliott, in a statement.
