Argentia terminal expansion project undergoes impact assessment

PLACENTIA BAY, N.L. — The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada has announced public consultations on the Cooper Cove Marine Terminal Expansion Project, a proposed expansion of the Argentia Marine Terminal in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The terminal is located in Placentia Bay, on the southeast coast of the island of Newfoundland.

The public, including Indigenous people, are invited to review the summary of the Initial Project Description and provide comments on the proposed project, stated a release.

Argentia, once a United States Naval Base, is now being reshaped into a multi-use port with services supporting several industries such as marine transport, renewable energy, aquaculture, offshore oil and mining.

Currently the port manages over 630 metres of docking space at five berths, and approximately 40 tenants. The project aims to increase docking space by extending the existing fleet dock, creating a new wharf face, increase quayside infrastructure and installing a roll-on-roll-off ramp.

Pattern Energy is currently exploring the potential for a renewable energy project at the port, aiming to produce 400 metric tons per day of green ammonia, a hydrogen electrolysis facility and a 300-megawatt wind project.

The proposed project is located in an industrial zone, connected to road networks and accessible to the northeastern Avalon Peninsula’s industrial zones.

It is expected to handle approximately 540,000 tonnes of cargo through about 245 vessels in the next five years. The capacity would increase to 371 vessels and approximately 907,000 tonnes of cargo by the year 2052, enabling trade across the Eastern Seaboard and trans-Atlantic regions.
