Feds support new net-zero fire station in Peterborough
COURTESY CITY OF PETERBOROUGH — An 11,000-square-foot fire station is being built in Peterborough, Ont. The station was designed by Lett Architects Inc. and is being built by JCB Construction Canada.

PETERBOROUGH, ONT. — The federal government has announced an allocation of $9.3 million in grants and loans to construct a new net-zero fire station in Peterborough, Ont.

The funding comes from the federal Green Municipal Fund, which is administered by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). The new station will replace the existing Fire Station 2 at Carnegie Road, which is over half a century old and at the end of its life cycle.

The city will pursue certification through the Canada Green Building Council, installing automated control systems, ground source heat pumps, solar panels on the rooftop and a heat-recovery system. The building will be constructed from mass timber and will also include water saving features.

The green design is expected to save the city an estimated $24,000 per year in operational costs.

“Municipalities influence half of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions with public buildings as large contributors,” stated FCM president Scott Pearce in a statement. “That’s why it is so important that they lead on and participate in local initiatives to lower greenhouse gas emissions.”
