Port of Thunder Bay receives Trade Corridors funding

THUNDER BAY, ONT. — The federal government has announced spending of $6.7 million for two projects at the Port of Thunder Bay in Ontario through the National Trade Corridors Fund.

The government will allot $3 million to redevelop the existing marshalling yard at the Ports Keefer Terminal, adding new heavyweight rail track and switches to increase cargo-handling capabilities. Approximately $3.7 million will expand the port’s capacity by upgrading the wharf at Keefer Terminal, expanding the terminal’s cargo laydown area, developing the electrical infrastructure for the new laydown area and improving the rail crossing infrastructure between Keefer Terminal and the marshalling yard.

Industries that use the Port of Thunder Bay include grain, potash, steel, wind turbine components, transformers and phosphate fertilizers, stated a release.

The National Trade Corridors Fund finances improvements to roads, rail, air and marine shipping routes that are part of the trade transport chain. Over $4.1 billion in funding has been committed under the program.
