Former Bird Construction president, CEO passes away

OAKVILLE, ONT. — Robert Allen Bird, former president and CEO of Bird Construction and a former chair of the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), passed away recently at the age of 92 in Oakville, Ont.

Bird devoted his career to Bird Construction Company, which was started by his father, Hubert John Bird, in Moose Jaw, Sask. in 1920 and is now one of Canada’s largest general contractors. He served as chair of the CCA in 1974.

Bird completed an engineering degree at the University of Manitoba in 1947 and joined the company immediately following his graduation. He rose through the ranks to become general manager of the company before becoming chairman, president and CEO after the death of his father in 1964.

He remained CEO until his retirement in 1991 and continued as chairman of the board of directors until 2001.

Bird married Ellen Cynthia Kinneard in 1948 who predeceased him in 2004. He is survived by his five children, Richard, Cynthia, Norah, Bruce and Greg, as well as his 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
