KITCHENER, ONT. — Across Canada, steel fabricators, mill producers, service centres, erectors and detailers opened their doors and offered guided tours of their facilities, workstations and offices as part of the annual SteelDay festivities.
For ACL Steel Ltd. in Kitchener, Ont. it was an interactive day that involved explaining the process from the quote stage, to drafting, purchasing, producing, shipping and site erection, explains the company in a statement to the Daily Commercial News. SteelDay was Sept. 28.
“ACL participates every year in SteelDay, as it gives insight into how we fabricate structural steel and the investment and equipment needed, from receiving raw product, to yard space for storage, to the trailers needed to ship to site,” explained Paul Seibel, ACL Steel president.
This year students from Conestoga College and Seneca College were able see firsthand what the industry looks like and the opportunities that are available to them. The students learned about drafting, project management, purchasing, estimating, sales, welding, fitting, detailing, painting, forklift operation, crane operation, shipping and steel erection.
“The best result is when customers understand the ‘hows’ of the process and when a student decides, ‘Yes, I want to be a part of this growing Industry,’” Seibel added.
Thunder Bay’s Coastal Steel Construction Limited also hosted an event where second year Lakehead University engineering students were able to come and tour the facility.
