The City of St. Catharines, Ontario has officially opened its new $19.6-million Kiwanis Aquatics Centre and a public library branch. Bradshaw Iron of Niagara Falls fabricated the steel posts of the building, designed by Shore, Tilbe, Perkins and Will and built by Bondfield Construction Company Ltd.
DCN earlier reported that the facility uses a combination of steel and glulam beams.

The province contributed $4.5 million under the Municipal Infrastructure Investment Initiative, the city stated in a press release July 3. The aquatics centre has two pools while the new library has 7,000 square feet of space.
The city is aiming for silver certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
In addition to provincial funding, the project received a $500,000 contribution from the Kiwanis Club of St. Catharines and a $30,000 contribution from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for a scoreboard, touch pads, timing system and digital clock for pool area. Lawrence Locke kicked in $50,000 in honour of his late wife Irene, while Water Communications Inc. contributed $5,000 in sponsoring a commissioned piece of art, dubbed Jeux D’Eau/Games of Water, by Naoko Matsubara.
“The artwork is an exploration of aquatic movement, and the dynamic composition celebrates the exhilaration that takes place when water and motion are combined with vibrant colours, semi-abstract shapes and sculptural techniques such as carving,” according to a city press release. “Matsubara’s design was chosen from 17 pieces of art submitted to the City after its call to artists.”
