Toronto firm brought in former Halcrow Yolles engineer Mohsen Mansouri to lead restoration division
Stephenson Engineering Ltd. has expanded its repertoire to include a restoration division.
Jeff Stephenson, Managing Principal of the Toronto-based structural engineering firm, said the Toronto restoration industry is very large and it can provide an alternative source to some of their customers.
“It’s important work and it’s rewarding in its own way, different than doing new buildings,” he said.
The firm had been involved in restoration previously, including work on underground parking garages and building replacements, but not in a dedicated manner.
The firm brought in Mohsen Mansouri, a professional engineer with over 25 years of experience, to lead the division.
Prior to joining Stephenson, Mansouri worked for almost 11 years at Halcrow Yolles as a senior principal where he was the head of its concrete restoration department. His project experience includes buildings, bridges, parking garages, and parking lots.
“Bringing Mohsen on to run the division, we can then provide much better service to our customers for the restoration work that’s required,” said Stephenson.
Mansouri has an extensive background in restoration work and has been a project principal for different types of concrete restoration projects such as slab replacement, post tension repairs, concrete repairs, waterproofing, asphalt pavement and cathodic protection.
He hopes the division will grow quickly at Stephenson.
“My policy is to provide quick service and good quality of service to the client,” he said.
This typically involves meeting with the client the same or the following day.
“They need quick response because when there is something wrong with the building they ask that it will be fixed right away. They cannot wait three weeks, three months, four months as usual for a new design.”
Mansouri plans to add business with physical condition assessment, which allows Stephenson Engineering to take the lead and decide if they need to hire an architect or mechanical or electrical consultants.
“The good thing with this is we can also establish a good relationship with architects,” he said.
“Architects sometimes need us so they will hire us as their sub consultant and sometimes we hire them with our team to help us with restoration type of work.”
Stephenson Engineering has grown from a two-man firm in the 1960s to its current size of over 50 employees. And the Building Restoration division is aimed at bringing new growth to the company.
