Waterdown Road gets major revamp

Waterdown Road in Aldershot, a neighbourhood in Burlington, Ont., is scheduled for a major overhaul, beginning this spring.

"The project is required due to the traffic demand in the area," said Bob Jurk, City of Burlington Senior Project Manager, Development and Infrastructure Division.

Waterdown Road is an exit off  Highway 403 with the busy Aldershot GO station. It is the last stop westbound before Hamilton, located just south of Highway 403.

The plans will include reconstruction/widening of Waterdown Road from Plains Road to Masonry Court, south of the Aldershot GO Transit/Via Rail station and will include bicycle lanes.

The project will include:

— a full road reconstruction;

— widening of the roadway to accommodate five lanes of traffic;

— new on-road bike lanes;

— new watermain installation;

— new storm sewer installation;

— utility relocations.

There is also the replacement or repair of two watermains and a storm sewer on the project

"A 600-millimetre concrete pressure pipe, installed in the late 1970s, that is in good condition will not be removed, however, a short section of this pipe will be lowered to accommodate the road works," said Jurk.

"The other watermain is a 300-millimetre local main installed in 1950, which will be replaced. The storm sewer was installed in 1983 and requires replacement due to its size and depth."

Lengthy road closures and lane restrictions are planned over the duration. Waterdown Road will be closed to through traffic from the north side of Plains Road to the south side of Masonry Court.

"Local access for local businesses and residents as well as our fire station located within the road closure will be maintained," said Jurk.

The project is under direction of the City of Burlington, with the municipality putting forth $4 million and Halton Region adding $1 million to the budget.

"We are completing watermain works on behalf of Halton Region," said Jurk. "We completed a prequalification process for general contractors over the past few weeks. We will be issuing the formal tender on Jan. 20, 2015."

The entire undertaking is due for completion in December 2015, with the exception of toplift asphalt, which will be placed in the spring of 2016.

"Depending on the construction progress and the arrival of winter this fall, final boulevard restoration (sod, tree planting) may be deferred to spring 2016, prior to toplift," said Jurk.

In preparation for the Waterdown Road construction, LaSalle Park Road was closed from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, 2014. The road closure was due to Bell relocating its underground infrastructure.
