KITCHENER, ONT. —Conestoga College has announced the opening of Phase 1 of the new Library Resource Centre at its Doon campus in Kitchener. Ont. with a design that showcases technology and maximizes natural light.
The opening of Phase 1 of the library, which took place in September, will be complemented by its Phase 2 work which will make it accessible to students in mid-November. The revitalized new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is designed to meet the needs of 21st-century learners, says the designer MMMC Architects, in a media release.
The LRC is a social hub and go-to focal place on campus, MMMC says, so the new facility has been designed to provide a wide range of services and amenities in an interactive environment. Mixes of independent and collaborative spaces have been programmed throughout the space to address student learning needs and create informal zones for social events. The old corridor, with minimal views into the library, has been opened up with glazed openings and a new lounge.
A major challenge for MMMC was that they were asked to complete the LRC renovation during Conestoga’s summer holiday break. MMMC says the short time frame was accomplished thanks to careful project planning and the contributions of a good general contractor.
Sub-consultants were DEI & Associates, Waterloo, mechanical and electrical; Tacoma Engineers, Guelph, structural; and TRP Construction, Burlington, Ont. contractor. MMMC Architects operates out of design studios in Waterloo and Brantford, specializing in educational and seniors housing design.
