MISSISSAUGA, ONT.—Slate Office REIT announced on Sept 24 that it is investing $46 million to revitalize two key properties in Mississauga’s Sheridan Park to accommodate SNC-Lavalin’s thriving nuclear sector.

As part of the investment, Slate Office, based in Toronto, and SNC-Lavalin, headquartered in Montreal, also announced they had signed a 10-year lease that will see the engineering powerhouse occupy 215,000 square feet of the newly refurbished research, development and office space in Sheridan Park.

Sheridan Park is located in western Mississauga near highway 403 along the Oakville border. Slate Office will be working at 2251 and 2285 Speakman Dr. to build the new facilities for SNC-Lavalin. The plan was said to be an opportunity for SNC-Lavalin to boost capabilities near its manufacturing facility located at 2233 Speakman Dr.

The two buildings to be renovated have office space and thus no nuclear materials, an SNC-Lavalin spokesperson confirmed.

SNC-Lavalin has owned the adjacent building at 2233 Speakman Dr. where work has been carried out since the early 1980s under license from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. This building houses tooling and other equipment SNC-Lavalin uses to service CANDU reactors around the world. It also houses the products,  material and instruments used to refurbish, maintain and test that tooling. It does not house any nuclear fuel.

CANDUs are capable of operating using many types of fuel including natural uranium, mixed oxide fuel, recycled uranium and thorium. In June, Candu Energy, which is a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, participated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the governments of Canada and the United Kingdom to enhance joint research and development, technology transfer and investment in the UK nuclear energy sector.

Sheridan Park was one of North America’s first corporate research parks. In total, more than 2,700 scientists, technicians, engineers and support staff are employed within Sheridan Park’s boundaries.
