Six firms prequalified for Port Hope remediation jobs

PORT HOPE, ONT. — Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has prequalified six companies for radioactive waste remediation work in the Port Hope, Ont. area east of Toronto stemming from its Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) and is now inviting the firms to bid on packages of projects within a Master Services Agreement.

The six prequalified firms announced in a Dec. 18 statement are AMEC Foster Wheeler, ECC/Quantum Murray, Arcadis, North Wind Portage, Milestone Environmental and Perma‐Fix.

Under the framework agreement, prequalified contractors are eligible to compete for the award of specific contracts to complete remediation and restoration work valued at an approximate combined total of $375 million. The project sites include the waterfront and Highland Drive areas and up to 800 residential properties in Port Hope.

The Port Hope Project involves the construction of an engineered above ground storage mound and supporting infrastructure for the long‐term management of approximately 1.2-million cubic metres of radioactive waste, cleanup of the waste from various sites in Port Hope and its transportation to the waste management facility, located south of Highway 401 and west of Baulch Road, the statement said.

The historic waste resulted from radium and uranium refining and processing operations of former Crown corporation Eldorado Nuclear and its private sector predecessors, which operated from the 1930s to 1988.

“This complex project requires the services of qualified, skilled and experienced environmental remediation contractors to meet its diverse needs and deliver the work on time and on budget,” said Craig Hebert, general manager of CNL’S Historic Waste Program Management Office, which oversees the PHAI.

“Having already completed a rigorous assessment of each contractor’s related experience, technical expertise, quality management programs and safety and compliance track records, we can now confidently award the contracts for work packages in a condensed timeframe.”

Hebert added, “With the completion of Cell 1 of the mound this fall and the prime contractors now in place, the cleanup remains on track to begin in 2018.”
