PICKERING, ONT. — Toronto-based Triple Properties has announced it will move forward on its Durham Live commercial centre proposal in Pickering, Ont. after Ontario Gaming GTA LP (OGGLP) confirmed the project will be the new home of its Durham Region casino.
Triple Properties will now proceed to seek municipal permitting for Durham Live, said an April 3 media statement. OGGLP has indicated it will relocate its existing Casino Ajax when the casino resort at Durham Live is operational in late 2019.
Plans are for Durham Live to include an indoor water park, film studios, hotels, convention space and other uses besides the casino.
The casino resort will offer gaming, hospitality, retail, restaurants and entertainment amenities. Owner OGGLP is a partnership between Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, which operates 25 gaming, entertainment and hospitality facilities across Canada and the U.S., and Toronto-based Brookfield Business Partners.
The statement said Durham Live is expected to create 10,000 local jobs.
The casino resort alone is anticipated to employ approximately 2,000 staff — 1,700 new jobs plus the 300 now employed at Casino Ajax, said the statement.
In August 2017, OGGLP was selected as the successful proponent by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation to operate three gaming facilities in the Greater Toronto Area, now branded as Casino Woodbine, Casino Ajax and Great Blue Heron Casino, with the exclusive right to operate the casinos for a minimum period of 22 years, said the statement.
