Ground broken for new LIUNA HQ

TORONTO – Diamond Schmitt Architects has announced, via Instagram, that construction has started on a new multi-use headquarters for the Labourers’ International Union of North America Local 183 in Vaughan, Ont.

A key feature of the 295,000-square-foot, six-storey headquarters will be a transparent glazing system, said Diamond Schmitt.

An additional three-storey wing will sit on top of an assembly hall, which will be buried in the landscape.
The design also features a large landscaped forecourt designed for social gatherings.

Other features include an office wing and spaces for member services that may include medical clinic facilities, a pharmacy, financial services, training classrooms and recreational facilities for retired members, said a previous media statement.

The assembly hall will have capacity to accommodate 3,000 diners.

The project is targeted to obtain LEED Silver.

The facility will be built along an expanded Huntington Road.

The ground-breaking was announced in October. Opening of the facility is planned for 2020.

Local 183 is the largest construction union local in North America.
