New building envelope sciences lab opens in Toronto

TORONTO — The Canadian building envelope sciences firm UL has announced it has opened a new facility in Toronto.

UL CLEB offers building envelope testing services, building forensic services, field testing and building envelope commissioning services for architects, building owners, manufacturers and installers in the construction markets across North America, said a recent statement. UL acquired Montreal-based CLEB in May 2017.

The Toronto facility contains both a fenestration lab and a mock-up lab that can test full-scale window wall, curtain wall and wall assemblies. The mock-up lab is located indoors in a 7,200-square-foot facility equipped with a 50-tonne overhead crane and can test to a maximum sample size of 40 feet high. UL said it’s among the largest indoor mock-up labs in Canada.

The labs are located at UL’s laboratory on Underwriters Road in Toronto.

In addition to the new Toronto lab, UL has building science test facilities in Montreal and Chicago.

“The expansion of our building envelope services in Toronto provides the construction industry throughout Ontario with access to an organization that is known worldwide for advancing building science. We are excited to offer our services to one of the most active construction markets in the world,” said Joe Hosey, general manager for Canada at UL, in the statement.

“We are excited by this opportunity to provide best-in-class services to the building envelope community throughout Ontario,” added Mario Goncalves, global business leader for UL. “The construction industry will have access to a broader range of UL complementary services and can rely on our technical expertise backed by our unmatched customer service, all delivered locally in Toronto.”
