CannTrust to launch cannabis plant expansion in Pelham

VAUGHAN, ONT. — Cannabis producer CannTrust Holdings Inc. recently announced it has obtained the necessary permits from the Town of Pelham to proceed with the phase three expansion of its growing facility in Pelham, located on the Niagara peninsula.

A Jan. 22 release said construction of the 390,000-square-foot facility will commence immediately.

CannTrust had originally applied to build 600,000 square feet. The firm said with enhancements to the phase three facility it can maintain its earlier production forecast.

The new phase of the expansion project includes investments in automation and a higher level of climate control.

Construction is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2020. Initial harvest from the phase three expansion is expected in the second quarter of 2020 and full production capacity is expected in the second half of 2020.

Responding to community concerns, CannTrust will add additional fan ventilation so its shades can be completely closed, at minimal incremental cost, said the release.

“We are pleased with the outcome of the discussions with the Town of Pelham,” said Peter Aceto, CEO of CannTrust, in the statement.

“We believe this decision reflects our view that we are a trusted member of the community and that we are intent on listening to our stakeholders. The demand for our medical and recreational products continues to be well in excess of supply and we are keen to move ahead with the phase three expansion and meet our capacity targets.”

The firm is currently in the midst of a phase two expansion that is expected to be complete by the end of this month.
