STRATFORD, ONT. — The Canadian Farm Builders Association (CFBA) handed out awards during its 2022 conference and AGM held recently in Stratford, Ont., celebrating those who made hay out of their designs.
The 2021 Project of the Year Award was won by HFH Inc. for a Timber Event Barn, which also won in the hobby-recreational category.
The barn was designed by HFH Inc. and GB Architect Inc. and engineered by Waddell Engineering Ltd. CFBA member suppliers include Easy Building Products Ltd.; Mar-Span; and Stubbes Precast.
Highlights include extensive renovations to an existing reclaimed 45-by-60 barn with a 60-by-41’ new reclaimed timber barn connected by a 45-by-9’ link. Other elements include a mezzanine, reclaimed structural timber posts and beams, a commercial kitchen with a covered barbecue deck and stamped concrete floors.
The 2021 Farm Storage Award also went to HFH Inc. for a farm shed/shop designed by DesignLogix Engineering, HFH Inc. and engineered by DesignLogix Engineering. Suppliers include Agway Metals and Mar-Span.
The 2021 Commercial-Institutional Award went to GARA Farm Buildings and suppliers include Mar-Span, Agway Metals and Trusscore.

Highlights of the building include a 6,500-square-foot fully equipped auto service centre; five full-service bays with hoists; one alignment bay with equipment recessed into floor; a 2,700-square-foot, two-storey office and customer space and timber frame porch entrance.
The project included contractor supplied project management from start to finish.
The 2021 Horse I Award was also presented to GARA Farm Buildings. The building was designed by Gara Farm Buildings and suppliers include System Equine, Agway Metals and Mar-Span.
Highlights include a new 3,000-square-foot stable; eight stall barn; steel cladding on remaining exterior; in-floor heat for office areas; and fully insulated with spray foam. The project included contractor supplied project management from start to finish.
The 2021 Horse II Award went to HFH Inc. for an Equine Wellness Facility. HFH also designed the building. Engineers on the project included Tacoma Engineers and DesignLogix Engineering. Suppliers included Agway Metals, Canarm, Mar-Span and System Equine.
The project includes extensive renovations and new buildings for a 55-stall Equine Wellness Facility; 42,550-square-foot equestrian complex all connected together; 41-stall main horse barn; fully automated ventilation system throughout; stalls feature custom hay feeders, block dividing walls covered in rubber; plastic lined walls for best cleanability for horse health and wellness; interlocking rubber aisles throughout with in-floor heat everywhere and hidden drains.
The project also includes a riding area and connecting links/viewing room, farm shop and a horse barn.
Middlesex Concrete Forming Ltd. was awarded the 2021 Poultry Award for the New Layer Chicken Barn Facility.
The facility was engineered by DesignLogix Engineering and suppliers include McCann Redi Mix, Agway Metals and Mar-Span Truss.
Highlights include a layer barn with a winter garden area; a layer barn addition with connecting hallway; manure storage building; structural steel wind columns in side wall; pop up doors into the winter garden, for bird access; and winter garden exterior wall clear polycarbonate with chicken doors.
The 2021 Dairy Award was presented to HFH Inc. for a Dairy Barn with Feed Kitchen designed and engineered by Stonecrest Engineering.
The suppliers are Agway Metals, Mar-Span Inc. and Stubbes Precast. Features of the facility include a dairy barn with a feed kitchen and connecting link; standing seam roof; antique-finished education room with viewing windows into main barn area; and calf facility in the main barn.
HFH Inc. also won the 2021 Other Livestock Award for a farm shed/shop designed by DesignLogix Engineering and HFH Inc. and engineered by DesignLogix Engineering. Suppliers include Agway Metals and Mar-Span.
