INUVIK, N.W.T. — Representatives from three levels of government have announced $40 million in funding for the Inuvik Wind Generation project. It’s the first project under the Government of Canada’s new Arctic Energy Fund, which supports energy security in Northern communities, said a recent statement.
The project will develop an energy system that will include the installation of wind turbines, a grid controller and a large battery storage system to generate energy when the wind is not in force. It also includes the construction of a five-kilometre access road from Dempster Highway to the project site and connections to the local electric grid.
The federal government is spending $30 million on the project through the Arctic Energy Fund and the Government of the Northwest Territories is contributing the remaining $10 million.
“This announcement is one step forward towards our government’s long-term vision and approach to energy and climate change that will enable the N.W.T. to transition to a strong, healthy economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels,” commented N.W.T. Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann in the statement.
