The long boom from a large yellow telescopic crane extends to the top of a very tall, multi-tiered structure at the sprawling Universal Studios Hollywood site in the San Fernando Valley area near Los Angeles, Calif.

There is purple and blue weatherproof sheathing around the top half of the building. Just below, a construction crew is working from scaffolding. Light-blue blocks make up the front facade of the edifice.

Welcome to Bowser’s Castle, one of several buildings on the property that will make up Super Nintendo World which is set to open at the theme park in 2023.

Soon, those who attend the park will be transported into the colorful world of Super Mario, Princess Peach and Luigi and the Mushroom Kingdom.

UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD – Super Nintendo World was conceived in partnership with Nintendo and the visionaries at Universal Creative and is aimed at delivering entertainment with innovative technological achievements inspired by characters and video games that have appealed to generations of Nintendo fans for over 40 years.

Scrim and scaffolding still covers much of the construction site. However, pyramids with different shades of brown and Mount Beanpole are now visible from escalators between the lots at Universal Studios.

It is the first Super Nintendo World in the U.S. Company brass have promised the themed land will be a game-changer, with innovative and immersive activities.

Super Nintendo World was conceived in partnership with Nintendo and the visionaries at Universal Creative and is aimed at delivering exhilarating entertainment with innovative technological achievements inspired by characters and video games that have appealed to generations of Nintendo fans for over 40 years.

The immersive land will be a visual spectacle of vibrant colors and architectural ingenuity located within a newly expanded area of the theme park, featuring a groundbreaking ride and interactive areas to be enjoyed by the whole family. There will also be themed shopping areas and dining.

Guests will access Super Nintendo World via a Warp Pipe. Once inside, they will find the signature Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, one of the world’s largest and most interactive rides.

The technologically-advanced ride was inspired by the popular Mario Kart video game series. It will fuse augmented reality (AR) with projection mapping technology and actual set pieces and propel guests into iconic environments from the Mario Kart games and where no two races are alike.

According to Universal Studios, the ride is one of the most complex ever built within the entertainment industry.

The sophisticated ride promises to be a multi-sensory cornucopia of color, sound and movement that invites guests to navigate familiar environs through the creative use and integration of head mounted AR goggles – a key point of differentiation that distinguishes the ride from other theme park attractions.

From the depths of the dungeon within Bowser’s Castle, guests will climb aboard stadium-style, four-seat Mario Kart vehicles inspired by the video game, put on their AR goggles on, and begin the ride.

As part of Team Mario, guests will steer through courses underwater and in the clouds to compete for the Golden Cup while collecting coins to defeat Team Bowser and win.

As the countdown begins to the debut of the L.A. park, a retail store with Super Nintendo World theming is scheduled to open soon just inside the main entrance.

The first Super Nintendo World opened at Universal Studios Japan in 2021 and received rave consumer and critical reviews. The company has plans to open a Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Orlando. The park was originally slated to open in 2023, but pandemic delays put the project on hold indefinitely.

Universal Studios Hollywood is a leading global entertainment destination with themes that recognize iconic movie and television shows. The park includes The Wizarding World of Harry Potter which features a bustling Hogsmeade village and rides and other immersive lands. The park also features Springfield, hometown of The Simpsons.

In addition to the theme park, guests can take tours at Universal Studios which takes them behind the scenes of the world’s biggest and busiest movie and television production studio.
