Report stresses need for cabinetry certification

Report stresses need for cabinetry certification

PALATINE, ILL. — A new report is advocating for quality certification of cabinetry products in the United States.

Research company Accountability Information Management’s (AIM) report titled The Importance of Certification in the Cabinet Industry was commissioned by the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association (KCMA) who “wanted to understand the penetration and awareness of KCMA standards within the design communities,” a release stated.

“For architects, certification programs offer assurance that the products they specify conform to specific requirements. For manufacturers, the programs provide a way to demonstrate product performance to gain the trust of their design community. This research proves that and will be invaluable to architects as they position their own companies to take advantage of certification processes,” AIM president Jim Nowakowski said in a statement.

The research includes charts, graphs and quotes from the design community participants in the study. It also detailed the KCMA A161.1 Quality Certification Seal, which contains structural, drawer, door operation and finish requirements for cabinets.

The report examined the important factors of brand selection, including quality, durability and style according to respondents.

Nowakowski observed “research is showing consumers are driving manufacturers to be better stewards of our environment. KCMA certification covers that as well.”

The report also stressed the importance of sustainability, which the release said KCMA addresses in their certification process.

“Sustainability is jumping to the front of the line when it comes to certification considerations for businesses. People want to know the product will perform, as well as where and how it is made, how it got to where it’s going, and other factors,” KCMA CEO Betsy Natz said. referring to the KCMA Environmental Stewardship program.

The report is available for download here.
