LINCOLN, NEB. — A $120 million railroad improvement project has been approved in Lincoln, Neb., that aims to accelerate freight movement and improve safety along the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway.
The project will feature construction of a new bridge over the rail corridor, which will eliminate traffic crossings and streamline operations, a release reads.
Currently, the BNSF double-track mainline carries 48 trains daily through the state’s capital city, causing 3.5-plus hours of blocked crossings.

Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with an opening date estimated for late 2031.
The project is partially funded by a $66.7 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Federal Railroad Administration, the release adds, with additional contributions from local and state partners, including the Railroad Transportation Safety District, Lincoln on the Move and others.
The Lincoln on the Move program uses sales tax to improve the city’s transportation infrastructure.
