WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government recently announced the 2021 Construction Award winners at the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association’s (MHCA) virtual annual general meeting, highlighting the contributions construction companies are making to the province.
“Our government recognizes the importance of the construction industry in Manitoba and the impact it has on rebuilding our economy,” said Ron Schuler, infrastructure minister, in a press release. “The completion of construction projects across the province provide communities with safe and sustainable infrastructure and further develops our labour force. The annual awards celebrate and recognize the outstanding work and achievements that the construction sector has performed over the past year and their important contributions to moving our province forward.”
The award nominations are submitted for projects in seven different construction categories each year. Judges evaluate the projects on a number of different criteria, including quality of work, adherence to contract specifications and design criteria, complexity of project and adherence to construction timetable and budget.
The 2021 winners are:
- Grading: Coco Paving (Canada) Inc. o/a Russell Redi-Mix Concrete – grading and bituminous reconstruction on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 16 through Birdtail Valley.
- Paving: Maple Leaf Construction Ltd. – bituminous paving on PTH 1 from PTH 26 to Gaol Road on the westbound and eastbound lanes.
- Special Projects: Coco Paving (Canada) Inc. o/a Russell Redi-Mix Concrete – bituminous paving, cold central plant recycling and shoulder work on PTH 34 from PTH 1 to PTH 16.
- Urban Works: Bayview Construction Ltd. – concrete reconstruction, granular base course and bituminous shoulders on PTH 75, southbound lanes south of the south junction of PTH 23 and in Morris.
- Major Structures: M.D. Steele Construction Ltd. – structure rehabilitation on PTH 10, 7.2 kilometres north of PTH 23 at Souris River.
- Minor Structures: Tri-Wave Construction Ltd. – structure rehabilitation, summer 2020 heavy rains flood recovery, including slope stabilization, various bridge sites in the vicinity of Brandon.
- Water Management: Trev’s Electric Ltd.- electric conversion and upgrades at Knapp Pump Station, The Pas.
“These construction project awards are highly regarded by our industry and MHCA members, and we thank minister Schuler for the presentations today,” said Chris Lorenc, MHCA president. “Our members strive for best practices and innovative solutions to build strong roads, highways and water and wastewater structures for Manitobans, helping to ensure provincial infrastructure assets are reliable and efficient.”
The province also released the 2022-23 winter advertising schedule for construction, engineering service providers and material supply tenders for projects across the province. The schedule is designed to give construction and engineering services industries lead time to plan for the upcoming season of designing and building highways, structures and other projects across the province. The advertising schedule includes a variety of projects, including surfacing, grading, structures, intersection improvements and culverts.
