Saint-Gobain acquires Building Products of Canada

Saint-Gobain acquires Building Products of Canada

MALVERN, PA. — France-based building products supplier Saint-Gobain recently announced it has signed an agreement to buy Building Products of Canada Corp., manufacturer of residential roofing shingles and wood fiber insulation panels in Canada.

The purchase price was $1.325 billion in cash.

A release said the acquisition of the roofing company is a follow-up to the firm’s purchase of Kaycan, a siding company, last year.

Building Products of Canada has three Canadian manufacturing plants, in Montreal, Edmonton and Pont-Rouge, Que., and 460 employees. Its product line includes asphalt shingle roofing, wood fiber insulation panels and acoustic panels.

Saint-Gobain said it will add $435 million to its sales base in Canada with the deal, boosting its existing $1.4 billion in sales, primarily through gypsum, insulation, ceilings and siding.

“Saint-Gobain’s innovation capability will allow Building Products of Canada to develop a broader, more innovative and more sustainable range of products for its customers,” stated the release.

Benoit Bazin, CEO of Saint-Gobain, commented, “This is an important and logical step for Saint-Gobain, allowing us to establish a leading position in roofing in Canada, completing our offering for the building envelope which we have reinforced with the recent Kaycan and GCP acquisitions. It completes our offering of solutions for light and sustainable construction in Canada as we have done successfully in the United States.”
