Edmonton reviews 2023 affordable housing achievements, plans future goals

EDMONTON — In a recent press release, the City of Edmonton reflected on its affordable housing achievements in 2023, revealing an investment of $40.3 million in this sector.

This investment led to the creation of 412 new homes, including 172 units specifically for supportive and transitional housing, and the renewal of 1,955 older units.

Since 2019, the city’s total investment of $165 million has facilitated the development of 3,116 affordable housing units, with 783 of these being supportive housing units.

A significant project in 2023 was the ongoing construction of a new four-storey supportive housing apartment in Holyrood, scheduled to open in early 2025. This development is part of the city’s collaborative efforts with Homeward Trust, representing a series of housing projects initiated since 2020.

Other key decisions made by city council in 2023 included selling city-owned land to Veterans’ House Canada for supportive housing and allocating $2.7 million to Catholic Social Services for transitional housing for women and children escaping domestic violence.

Furthermore, $16.7 million in grants were distributed to assist in the creation of 276 units of affordable and supportive housing.

Looking ahead, in January 2024 the city plans to update its Affordable Housing Strategy, setting new targets aligned with the goal of eliminating core housing need and chronic or episodic homelessness. This includes a target of 2,700 new or renewed affordable housing units by 2026.
