VANCOUVER — The City of Vancouver is inviting the public to share their thoughts on 17 areas identified as “Future Villages.”
As outlined in the Vancouver Plan, these are areas with existing small retail clusters that, over time, could grow into vibrant neighbourhoods that better meet residents’ daily needs.
The current project focuses on 17 of 25 identified villages, with work on the remaining eight folded into other planning work, states a release.
The idea is to enable much-needed housing to help bolster these villages.
According to the city, the benefits of these villages include:
- Adding “missing middle” housing: Increasing housing supply by enabling multiplexes, townhomes and low-rise apartments up to six storeys, including rental and below-market rental housing.
- Growing commercial opportunities: Adding more retail spaces and drawing more people to neighbourhoods to support local businesses. Public spaces are also included in the mix.
- Shaping complete, connected neighbourhoods: Offer residents the ability to live or work within a short walk, roll or bike ride from shops and services.
Feedback from residents will contribute to the early directions of the draft plan, the release continues.
