KEHEWIN CREE NATION, ALTA. — Located approximately 31 kilometres southwest of Bonnyville, Alta., the community of Kehewin Cree Nation, which has been under a boil-water advisory for over 11 years, is in the process of building a new water treatment system with a goal to have the advisory lifted by 2020.
Designed by Associated Engineering, the project includes the construction of a new Water Treatment Plant (WTP), a raw water system as well as upgrades to the core area reservoir and pumphouse.
The construction contract for project has been awarded to Chandos Construction.
According to a recent release, Indigenous Services Canada has invested $13.9 million in the project.
At the recent sod-turning ceremony for the WTP, Minster of Indigenous Services Canada Jane Philpott commented that this milestone reflects the shared commitment with the federal government to build critical infrastructure and improve access to safe and reliable drinking water for all First Nation communities across the country.
According the Government of Canada’s website, approximately 67 long-term water advisories have been lifted since November 2015 with 73 advisories remaining in effect. Projects underway or completed will benefit 587 First Nation communities and all long-term advisories are expected to be lifted by 2021.
