Green Line receives new LRV mock-up
CITY OF CALGARY — A mock-up of the new Urbos 100 LRVs for Calgary’s Green Line. The mock-up is significantly smaller than the actual LRV, at one quarter of the length and 20 per cent of the weight. But the mock-up allows the City to confirm the design is up to technical standards and will provide training opportunities for future operators.

CALGARY — A mock-up of the new Urbos 100 Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) has been received by Calgary’s Green Line.

The mock-up is roughly 12 metres in length, only a quarter of the actual LRV’s length and weighs 12,000 kilograms, which is only 20 per cent of the actual vehicle weight, a news release states.

The mock-up will allow the Green Line to validate its technical requirements and ensure the vehicle is safe and accessible for all Calgarians.

It has been constructed with steel, wood and plastic as well as a combination of real and simulated components similar to the real LRV. The cab will be separated from the mock-up to assist with training future operators.

Spanish manufacturers CAF were awarded the contract to supply 28 Urbos 100 LRVs for the Green Line.

The Urbos 100 has low floors to assist with accessibility and will dock level with station platforms, the news release states.

The new LRVs represent “a combination of the best lessons learned from 41 years of Calgary Transit LRV operation and 20 years of CAF refining the Urbos LRV,” said Green Line’s LRV Systems and Systems Integration Manager Shakti Sarai in the release.
