The 28th annual City of Vancouver Heritage Awards were presented on February 19, the first day of Heritage Week, to honour the extraordinary efforts of architects, community organizations, developers, writers, artists and ordinary citizens who work to preserve our heritage.

The 28th annual City of Vancouver Heritage Awards were presented on February 19, the first day of Heritage Week, to honour the extraordinary efforts of architects, community organizations, developers, writers, artists and ordinary citizens who work to preserve our heritage.
Mayor Sam Sullivan conferred award certificates upon the winners who represented a range of projects which reflect the diversity of the heritage in neighbourhoods across the city.
Awards of Recognition were presented for the following:
Friends of Victory Square: awarded to this group for their cultural initiative and efforts in developing a community consensus to revitalize a historic precinct, including the rehabilitation of its iconic Cenotaph.
Downtown Vancouver Modernist Architecture Map Guide: awarded to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and Docomomo.B.C. for the publication of this map, which offers the story of the city’s downtown architectural history in the Modern period, and a self-guided walking route to raise awareness of Vancouver’s recent significant built heritage.
169 Hastings Street Cornice Replacement: awarded to owner Fook Sew Lum, McGinn Engineering and Preservation, and Stephens Sheet Metal for replacing the cornice, and recognizing the importance of cornice elements for the preservation of the historic streetscape.
906 Main Street – The Left Bank Restoration: awarded to H.R. Hatch Architect, McGinn Engineering Preservation and Ballenas Project Management for the preservation and rehabilitation of this important temple bank building.
44 Water Street: awarded to owner Scott Hawthorne, the architects of record, Barry McGinn and Busby Perkins and Will, and contractor LRG Construction, for the rehabilitation of the heritage building as part of the historic Water Street streetscape.
995 Bute Street: awarded to Duncan Wilson & Rowland Johnson and James Burton of Birmingham & Wood Architects for rehabilitating by adaptive reuse of the Rand House at 995 Bute Street, and contributing to the neighbourhood character of the West End.
Awards of Merit winners were:
Coal Harbour Seawall Balustrade Restoration: awarded to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, Spratt Emanuel Engineering, and Van den Kerkhof & Son Masonry, for the continued maintenance and restoration of the Seawall Balustrade by employing exemplary conservation theory and practice.
Vancouver General Hospital: 100 Years of Care and Service: awarded to Vancouver Coastal Health, the Heather Heritage Society, the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association, and author Donald Luxton for this well-researched and thoughtfully designed book which commemorates the VGH’S centennial while telling an important story of the history, people, and events of its past.
Lisa Smedman, Vancouver Courier series of articles on the history of Vancouver neighbourhoods: awarded to journalist Lisa Smedman and the Vancouver Courier for a series of well-researched articles on the social and cultural history of Vancouver neighbourhoods which greatly contributed to building community awareness and expanding the public’s knowledge of the diverse cultural and social history of Vancouver.
1826 Blanca Street: awarded to owner/project manager Elizabeth Murphy, architect Keith Jakobsen, Hans Von Tiesenhausen, Pantheon Developments and Margot Keate-West of Keate & Co. Designers for the preservation and thorough restoration of this heritage-listed Point Grey house.
Awards of Honour were presented for:
844 Dunlevy Street: awarded to owners Graham Elvidge and Kathleen Stormont for their exemplary restoration of this Queen Anne house in one of Vancouver’s first neighbourhoods, and advancing the education, awareness, and advocacy of heritage in the community and the city.
TLC, The Land Conservancy: awarded to TLC, The Land Conservancy, and the Save Joy Kogawa House Committee for its outstanding advocacy efforts in saving the childhood home of writer Joy Kogawa, and bringing municipal, provincial, national and international attention to the effort with its theme of “Hope, Healing and Reconciliation”.
